How To: Vegan Halloween!

Are you newly vegan wondering how the HECK you’re going to get through October without slamming 26 Milky-way Midnights straight to your face? Or what kind of candy you get for trick or treaters? Welcome to your vegan Halloween guide! We’re here to guide you through the process!

I love, love, love Halloween. I love everything about it from the costumes, to trick or treating, to the candy and Halloween makeup. But Halloween changed a bit for me when I was transitioning to my vegan lifestyle. Definitely not in a bad way! Just a little different!

I found myself researching costumes to make sure they were cruelty-free, scoping out my candies ingredients to make sure they were vegan, and even buying candy for my little trick or treaters had to change!

We’re covering everything vegan Halloween here- costumes, makeup, and Halloween candy, as well as some of our favorite vegan Halloween treats!

Vegan Halloween Costumes

So this one is something that may come at a higher priority to some, and fall short to others. Which is entirely fine! Again veganism isn’t about perfection. We’re more or less going to give you pointers for what to pay attention to when searching for (or designing) the perfect Halloween costume to ensure your costume itself is cruelty-free!

Ingredients To Be Aware Of!

• If your costume contains fur – be sure its faux fur! Usually super easy to tell here and absolutely should specify on the tag! If not – faux fur will feel more carpet-y, and you can sometimes see the sewing lines and seams! While real fur wouldn’t be sewn into a backing but rather still remaining on the animal skin itself. Yuck.
• Leather advisory! Just like fur, leather is actually made entirely of animal skin! ICK. A lot of Halloween costumes will require leather-like materials. Think leather jackets, belts, boots, things of that nature. Luckily, most consumers will purchase faux leather costumes because most store-branded Halloween costumes on the market are not made of real leather. Just something to pay attention to!
• Be leary of “vintage” items and stores!! Many of these pieces as beautiful as they are will be made of silk, wool, leather, cashmere, angora, and real fur. Why? Because it wasn’t abnormal to use animal products much more frequently back then!
• Check your accessories too! Shoes, belts, jewelry, zipper pulls, feathers in hats etc – for animal materials!

Vegan Halloween Makeup

If you’re a makeup junkie like I am, you’ll love this section and maybe even skip right down to it! As a makeup artist myself I’m obsessssssed with Halloween makeup. Looking at it, doing it, wearing it, photographing it, ALL of it. Gimmie all the Halloween makeup! • Mehron-double check all products just in case but Mehron is STRONG in the game of theatrical makeup! Slay just about ANY look from sfx makeup to everyday makeup!
• Premire Products, Inc – the entire line is vegan! Skies the limit! Have at it!
• Kryolan – Another strong in the game of theater makeup! Check out their fake blood!
• Cinema Secrets – 3rd ones a charm? Another anchor company for theater and stage performing! Cinema Secrets is a fabulous line that’s sure to meet all of your needs this Halloween! (Also they make the BEST ever makeup brush cleaner. I use this for my personal brushes as well as on my pro brushes for clients as well! It removes even the gunkiest of makeup off the scummiest brushes!
• Camelon Bodypaint – this line is one I’ve never personally used. Its main products are body paints which is something I’ve never really played with! If your costume requires any body-painting this company is fully vegan!
